Ukraine: Zelensky and Trump to meet in Washington on Monday

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced today that he has accepted an invitation from his US counterpart, Donald Trump, to discuss all the "details" of the conflict in Washington on Monday, following the summit held this Friday in Alaska.

It will be the Ukrainian leader's first White House visit since a failed meeting in late February, when Trump and Zelenskyy held a tense exchange in the Oval Office, and this time it comes with the shadow of an end to Putin's diplomatic isolation.

The Ukrainian leader also stated that he and Trump had already spoken by phone after the Alaska summit, describing the call as "a long and substantive conversation." Zelensky explained on social media that they first had a "one-hour private conversation," which was later joined by other European leaders.

After meeting with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in Alaska, Donald Trump stated that the end of the conflict in Ukraine now depends on Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky.

"Now, it's really up to President Zelenskyy to get this done. And I would also say that European countries need to get involved a bit, but that's up to President Zelenskyy," the White House leader said, without elaborating, in an interview with Fox News after departing Alaska.

The leaders of the United States and Russia met on Friday at Elmendorf-Richardson Air Force Base outside Anchorage, which, despite praise for progress from both sides, produced no announcement regarding a solution to the conflict in Ukraine, which was the focus of the meeting.

At the end of a nearly three-hour summit, Putin and Trump held a joint press conference but did not take questions about the discussions, to which Zelensky was not invited.
