Eduardo Souto de Moura distinguished in Japan

Architect Eduardo Souto de Moura was honored this week with the Praemium Imperiale 2025, awarded by the Japan Art Association.

It should be noted that, since 1988, this has been one of the most prestigious awards in this country, annually recognizing the international contributions of five personalities in the arts and culture, including painters, sculptors, musicians, architects, directors, stage directors and choreographers.

The Japan Art Association justifies the award given to the artist by his "approach deeply rooted in the physical and cultural context of the places where he works" , also recognizing the way in which his work "promotes a continuous reflection on the challenges that contemporary architecture can and should face" .

Among the highlighted projects are the Pousada Mosteiro de Amares (1997), the Braga Municipal Stadium (2003) and the Paula Rego Museum (2009). Eduardo Souto de Moura's distinction follows that of architect Álvaro Siza, who won the award in 1998.
