Feira Library is the one that made the most loans in the country and invested the most in books in 2023

The Municipal Library of Santa Maria da Feira is, of those that make up the public network, the one that made the most loans in the country in 2023 and the one that invested the most in books and other documents, revealed the management of this structure.
The conclusion is the result of an analysis of the most recent statistics from the National Network of Public Libraries (RNBP), which, evaluating the 2023 performance of the 427 facilities it owns in 253 municipalities in the territory, placed the aforementioned municipality in the district of Aveiro and the Metropolitan Area of Porto as the most active in several areas.
“We are the library that lends the most books and music, the one that has the most itinerant services, the one that has the most active users and the one that invests the most in acquiring documents” , the director of this cultural space, Mónica Gomes, told Lusa.
Starting with home loans, the accounting in question is as follows: in 2023, the Feira Library and its nine branches provided users with a total of 129,719 items, which included 55,987 books for adults, 73,732 for children and 3,805 music CDs.
In terms of itinerancy, in turn, the structure stood out for having three mobile services: a library van for traveling through the most peripheral areas of a municipality with 231.4 square kilometers, another for seasonal use in bathing areas and a third for specific visits to factories and institutions of a social nature - this one won, in fact, the 2023 Maria José Moura Award for Good Municipal Public Practices, for bringing books, magazines, DVDs and CDs to the industrial community, also providing internet access and an ATM payment terminal.
In addition to this itinerant offering, there is also the BiblioLED remote service, which allows registered users to consult titles in digital formats such as audiobooks and PDFs, as well as the PressReader platform, which brings together more than 7,000 newspapers and publications from around the world, and the EBSCO database, specifically for researching scientific content .
As for registered users with regular activity, the Feira Library also stood out as having the most active users, specifically 14,058 who made requests at the service desk – a universe that is distinct from the 66,825 entries registered in the building, a number that includes citizens who may not be registered as official users and who are not asked to identify themselves at the time of their visit.
As for investment, the leadership is due to the 78,538 euros that the library applied to the purchase of new documents, a technical term that applies not only to books, but also to music CDs, DVDs with films and documentaries, board and strategy games, and even musical instruments.
