Mealhada prepares traditional Pilgrimage of the Ascension to Bussaco

Today, Mealhada City Council celebrates Municipality Day with a day marked by a tribute to the municipality's workers and the traditional Pilgrimage of the Ascension to the Bussaco National Forest.
The morning begins with a solemn ceremony at the Messias Cinema Theatre, scheduled for 10 am, where municipal employees who have completed 25 years of service will be honoured. “This is an occasion to recognise employees who have been with the company for 25 years for their dedication and effort in serving the community. We extend this recognition to all our employees who strive every day to provide the best service to our citizens”, highlighted António Jorge Franco, Mayor of Mealhada.
The afternoon is dedicated to the traditional celebration of the Ascension, with the Mata Nacional do Bussaco as the main stage. The Mata do Bussaco Foundation organizes the Crafts Fair and the Ascension Fair, events that attract visitors from all over the region.
The Mealhada municipal holiday, celebrated on Ascension Thursday, has deep roots in local tradition, dating back to the end of the 19th century. It was already customary for the population to climb to the highest point in the municipality to celebrate the Ascension of Jesus, 40 days after Easter. Today, although many choose to go up by car, the pilgrimage remains alive, with the participation of folklore and ethnographic groups, and the usual entertainment with popular music and dance. “It is a day for families and friends to get together, an opportunity to visit or revisit Bussaco and enjoy an absolutely magical natural space that is unique in the country”, highlighted the mayor.
