CIM de Leiria wants to discuss a high-speed line with the regions of Aveiro and Coimbra

This connection represents “an essential axis of articulation between the country's two main metropolitan areas” and “a lever for the competitiveness of the coastal center, where a significant part of Portuguese industrial production and exports are concentrated.”
According to CIMRL, the station in Leiria is a “strategic response to the population's sustainable mobility needs and to reducing dependence on highways” and “a measure aligned with European objectives of decarbonization and strengthening intermodality.”
The proposed Aveiro–Viseu–Guarda–Salamanca–Madrid rail link, resulting from the Joint Regional Declaration signed by Portuguese and Spanish entities, “although understandable within the framework of strengthening the European Atlantic Corridor, should not occur to the detriment of the priority rail links already defined within the scope of the Trans-European Transport Network”, warned the CIM of the Leiria Region.
Recognizing the joint effort of the local authorities involved and the value of the investment in the modernization of the Beira Alta Line, the local authorities of the Leiria region warn “about the risk of dispersion of resources, unjustifiable delays and loss of focus in the execution of national structural projects, namely the Lisbon-Porto connection with a stop in Leiria, whose implementation still awaits decisive progress”.
The president of CIMRL, Gonçalo Lopes, today invited the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing to participate in the meeting with the mayors of Coimbra and Aveiro, “recognizing the importance of their active involvement in building truly integrated, efficient and sustainable mobility solutions”.
The CIMRL is aligned with the territorial cohesion and sustainable development that guide national and European railway policy, but highlighted that the "concentration of investments must serve the regions with the greatest industrial and export dynamics, as is the case of the Linha do Oeste, a structuring railway axis for the Central Region and which requires urgent investments to modernize the service."
