FGTS profits will be distributed by the end of August: see who is eligible

The Board of Trustees of the FGTS (Service Time Guarantee Fund) has scheduled its next meeting for July 24th. On this date, the amount of the fund's profits to be distributed to workers by the end of August will be decided. According to legislation, the amount must be deposited into accounts by August 31st.
The FGTS generates profits through investments in areas such as housing, basic sanitation, and infrastructure. Part of the profits has been shared among the accounts since 2016, when a law mandated distribution to increase the profitability of workers' linked accounts.
Responsible for deciding the amount to be distributed, the Board of Trustees is made up of representatives of the federal government (appointed by different ministries), workers (represented by unions) and employers (through those appointed by employers' associations).
The greater the profit achieved in the period, the greater the transfer will be.
Last year, for example, R$15.2 billion was distributed to workers .
Who is entitled to receive FGTS profits? All individuals who had a positive balance in their FGTS accounts in the base year will receive the amount. In this case, the 2025 payment refers to the 2024 period.
To find out if you had a balance during this period, you can check your statement in the Meu FGTS app, available for download on both Android and iOS devices.
It is also possible to consult at Caixa Econômica Federal branches, by requesting a statement directly at the service desk.
How will the value for each worker be defined? We must wait to know the amount that will be distributed in 2025. A total amount will be defined and, from this, a multiplier will be used to calculate the proportion that each worker will receive.
For example, in 2024, the multiplier index will be 0.02693258. Thus, a person with a balance of R$10,000 in the FGTS account on December 31, 2023, received an amount of R$269.3 (10 x 0.02693258) on August 31.
In 2023, the multiplier index was 0.02461511. Therefore, an account with a balance of R$10,000 on December 31, 2022, received an amount of R$246.15 (10 x 0.02461511) in August 2023.
What amount should be distributed? As the table shows, in several years the Board distributes almost all of the profits. In 2023 and 2022, the decision was to distribute 99%. In 2021, it was 96%.
In 2023, however, the government proposed a 65% distribution. Thus, although the R$15.1 billion share of profits was a record, the proportion was lower than in the previous period.
In June 2024, the Supreme Federal Court (STF) ruled that the adjustment of FGTS balances must, at a minimum, follow the Broad National Consumer Price Index (IPCA), which measures the country's official inflation. This ensures that the amount does not lose purchasing power. In 2024, the indicator was 4.83%.

The FGTS (Unemployment Fund) emerged as a form of security for workers dismissed without cause. Thus, most people access the funds only after their employment relationship is terminated by the company or after retirement.
Those who opted for the FGTS anniversary withdrawal model, however, do not receive the amount upon dismissal. Instead, they receive installments of R$1,000 each year, in the month of their anniversary.
There are exceptional situations in which the FGTS can be accessed outside of the two withdrawal models. Some of these are: using the money as a down payment on a home loan, serious illness of the employee or dependent, purchase of orthotics and prosthetics, among others.
