US consumer confidence falls in June
U.S. consumer confidence deteriorated again in June after a recovery in May amid concerns about the impact of tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, according to a barometer released Tuesday.
The index that measures this confidence, published by the professional association Conference Board, fell from 98.4 points in May to 93 in June, a difference of 5.4 points.
Analysts had expected a slight improvement, according to the consensus published by MarketWatch.
The drop seen in June “erases almost half of the strong gains” from the previous month, notes Stephanie Guichard, an economist at the Conference Board, quoted in the statement.
“ The tariffs [implemented by the Trump administration] are still very much on the minds of consumers and associated with concerns about their negative impact on the economy and prices,” he adds.
Another consumer confidence barometer, published in mid-June by the University of Michigan, highlighted a recovery in Americans' mood compared to the previous month.
