Every person should drink enough water every day. In an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta, paramedic Natalya Balan told how much water you need to drink and whether it can be replaced with something.
As the specialist noted, the total amount of water in the human body varies from 55 to 65% depending on height and weight, and inside the cells this figure reaches 80%. The expert specified that water ensures the normal functioning of the immune, cardiovascular and nervous systems, and also improves metabolism, but it is necessary to maintain a balance in water consumption, because a large amount of it can lower the level of sodium in the blood, thereby causing a state of weakness, headaches and swelling.
Balan emphasized that the established norm of consumption of 30 milliliters per 1 kilogram of weight is confirmed by studies. She drew attention to the fact that the daily norm of water depends on many features, but its average value fluctuates from 1.5 to 1.8 liters per day. At the same time, the paramedic pointed out that not only the quantity of water plays a large role, but also its quality, because with age, the body's protective functions weaken, so older people should exclude hard water from their diet. First of all, according to the publication's interlocutor, tap water should be excluded during cooking and simple drinking, since it contains chlorine residues and various impurities that provoke kidney disease.
There is an opinion that boiled water is more useful, but this is a myth, the specialist continued. She explained that lime remains on the walls of the kettle, and the water itself loses all its useful properties. Balan claims that filtered water containing useful microelements is much better. The benefits of juices and fruit drinks are not in doubt, but some people completely replace regular water with them, and this is a big mistake, given that packaged juices have a high glycemic index due to the large amount of sugar they contain, and fruit drinks, in turn, are characterized by increased acidity, which can adversely affect the state of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), the expert warned.
The paramedic also advised drinking kvass with great caution due to the fact that the list of contraindications to its use, in addition to diabetes and cirrhosis of the liver, also includes old age, and in addition, kvass is not recommended for hypertension, and high blood pressure is the most common problem among older people.
Tea is considered the safest flavored drink for older people, Balan added.
