In Tomsk Oblast, at the Siberian Chemical Plant (SCP), test runs of the latest complex designed for the disposal of liquid radioactive waste have begun. This technology, created by experts from the Rosatom State Corporation, ensures the transformation of hazardous materials into a glassy structure, thereby preventing their storage and reducing the likelihood of damage to the environment.
The installation is based on the method of induction melting using a "cold crucible" - a modern achievement of Russian researchers. The equipment is compact in size, highly resistant to aggressive substances and can be serviced remotely. During the recycling process, waste is combined with borosilicate glass, forming a durable and safe material that is not susceptible to high temperatures and leaching.
The tests are carried out using real solutions that arise during the processing of recovered uranium. This is the first practical application of this technology in industrial conditions. In case of successful completion of the tests, the method can be used at other nuclear industry facilities.
