Internet record broken when Osimhen arrived in Istanbul

According to data from internet exchange operator DE-CIX Istanbul, the peak internet data flow reached 505.26 Gbit/sec just after 10:00 PM on July 30th. Osimhen's arrival in Istanbul, his arrival off the plane and meeting with the fans, made a splash not only in the football world but also across the internet.
The arrival of 26-year-old star footballer Osimhen, who spent last season on loan at Galatasaray and finished the Süper Lig as top scorer, also broke an internet record.
The internet reached its highest internet data flow in history, with 505.26 Gbit/s of instantaneous traffic recorded just after 10:00 PM on July 30. This record was driven by intense digital interaction via social media, news platforms, and video services.
DE-CIX Turkey Regional Director Bülent Şen explained that 500 Gbit/s of data traffic is equivalent to watching approximately 300,000 TikTok videos simultaneously. Şen said, “DE-CIX Istanbul paves the way for uninterrupted digital services across all sectors and is at the heart of Türkiye's digital ecosystem. Thanks to the efficient management of network traffic, sectors can sustainably implement data-driven business models. We continue to grow as a critical digital bridge between Europe and the Middle East. The number of networks connected to this exchange increased by 18.5% in 2024. Data traffic also saw a significant increase, with a total of 726 petabytes of data transferred, representing an 11% increase compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, the new record of 505.26 Gbit/s reached at Osimhen represents a 295% increase since the beginning of 2020 and a 34% increase since the beginning of 2025.”
