Formula 1 in Spielberg live ticker: Norris takes pole

Formula 1 makes its stop in Spielberg. Max Verstappen disappoints in qualifying at Red Bull's home race. Lando Norris secures pole position for Sunday's race at 3 p.m. Follow the race weekend in Austria in the live ticker.

McLaren driver Lando Norris raced to pole position for the Formula 1 race in Austria. The World Championship runner-up from England delivered a stunning lap at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, relegating Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc to second place. For Norris, it was his third pole position this year and his twelfth overall. World Championship leader Oscar Piastri finished third in the second McLaren.

World champion Max Verstappen, who had secured pole position in each of the past four years, couldn't get beyond seventh place in the Red Bull and had to abort his final lap. "The car is completely undrivable. It's even worse than before. I don't know what to say," the Dutchman complained about the lack of grip during the grid position hunt.

The only German driver in the field, Nico Hülkenberg, was denied a place in the Kick Sauber race by a mistake in turn four. The Rhinelander braked too late and ended up in a disappointing last place after the first knockout lap.

McLaren driver Lando Norris got ready for the Austrian Formula 1 qualifying session with the fastest time in the final practice session. The World Championship runner-up relegated his teammate Oscar Piastri to second place at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg with a lap time of 1:04.324 minutes. The Australian championship leader was 0.118 seconds slower than the Englishman due to problems with his underbody.

World champion Max Verstappen, who secured the best starting position in the past four years, finished third at Red Bull's home race. The Dutchman, who spun his car completely on the start-finish straight at the end of the session, was 0.210 seconds behind the leader. Nico Hülkenberg finished the one-hour practice session in 13th place in the Kick Sauber.

Piastri damaged the underbody on the left side of his McLaren when he exited the gravel trap. His mechanics were then busy repairing the damage with a glue gun. Piastri leads the World Championship by 22 points over Norris. Verstappen, who is in third place, is 43 points behind the leader.
