Eliminating sugar from your daily diet isn't easy , which is why multiple alternatives for a healthier, lower-calorie diet have emerged. In this search, several options emerged, but it seems one of them could be causing problems for the brain and cardiovascular health of thousands of people. Do you know which one it is?

Erythritol, a low-calorie sweetener widely used as a sugar substitute, has been the subject of recent research. A study presented in April 2025 at the American Physiology Summit analyzed how this product affects the endothelial cells of human cerebral microvessels, which are crucial for regulating blood flow and the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the brain.

Cuidate Plus noted that the results indicated that exposure to levels of erythritol comparable to those achieved after consuming a beverage sweetened with this compound causes a significant increase in oxidative stress in these cells, negatively affecting their structure. Deficiency can affect cognitive performance and memory and increase the risk of stroke.

Solutions to this problem

Erythritol is widely used in "sugar-free" or "low-calorie" products and is considered safe by international organizations. However, these findings raise the need for further research into its potential risks.

For now, experts recommend moderate consumption, reading product labels, and prioritizing a diet based on natural, fresh foods.
