PostNL still gets an extra day for delivering letters or cards

PostNL is allowed by the government to take two days to deliver letter mail. If it is up to the government, the company will be given an extra day of space. This was just announced by outgoing minister Vincent Karremans. Medical mail and condolence cards must still be delivered to the doormat within 24 hours.
Earlier, former minister Beljaarts (PVV) withdrew this proposal after fierce criticism from the House of Representatives. The House called the decision 'premature'.
Private mail must now be delivered within 24 hours. If Karremans has his way, that will be 48 hours from the middle of next year. In this proposal, PostNL must continue to deliver mail five days a week, from Tuesday to Saturday. From 2028 or 2029, the company may need an additional 24 hours of flexibility, the minister warns.
Rules are outdatedThe rules for mail delivery are outdated, says Karremans. PostNL in turn complains that it is no longer profitable to send mailmen out every day. Fewer and fewer letters are being sent, which makes the work no longer profitable. "We are making the rules for mail delivery somewhat more flexible, to ensure that mail delivery continues to work throughout the Netherlands," says Karremans.
