"Our junior team athlete, Milenka, had a very serious fall while skiing. It's the ninth day since the accident. I won't go into details. It's very, very bad. We'll need the support of everyone with a good, big heart. For now, we're looking for doctors who will give us a different prognosis than one percent for Milena's fitness," Agnieszka Cyl said on TVP Sport.
The accident, in which the athlete suffered serious injuries, took place a few days ago. Now, the details of the incident, which took place on the running tracks near Jakuszyce, during a training session in which seven athletes from the junior Polish national team participated, were given in an interview with WP SportoweFakty by Jerzy Szyda, coach of AZS AWF Wrocław, UKN Melafir Czarny Bór.
"What happened is beyond human imagination. I have never even heard of anything like this happening. It was a basic, continuous training with technical elements. The accident happened at the very end of it," said Jerzy Szyda in the aforementioned conversation. The athlete was found conscious, lying on the ground, and it was apparently obvious that she had suffered a spinal injury.
"There was no way he could have fainted"The man, however, could not explain how the accident happened. The route was well prepared, the training was not demanding, and the athlete's measurements did not indicate anything alarming.
"Approx. two minutes before the accident, measurements indicated that Milena was relaxed and everything was fine, so she couldn't have fainted. [...] During the descent, the competitors reached a speed of 40 km/h, which is quite standard in such conditions. Even if a fall occurred, athletes with such skills would be able to absorb it perfectly," the coach noted in an interview with WP SportoweFakty. Jerzy Szyda also added that the poles the competitor was using were not broken, and there were no major signs of damage on her skis.
Milena Widlak suffered serious spinal injuries, but a final diagnosis has not yet been made. She has already undergone surgery, but tests to date have not yet shown the full extent of the damage. The athlete is awaiting further tests. However, her condition is serious. Agnieszka Cyl, in an interview with TVP Sport, emphasized that doctors give the 18-year-old only a one percent chance of returning to fitness.
The Polish Biathlon Association is already appealing for help for the young athlete. It is not yet known how expensive her treatment will be, but Jerzy Szyda estimates that it could be as much as several million PLN.
