Canada may reverse some tariffs imposed on the United States

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney admitted Tuesday that Canada could roll back some of the tariffs imposed on the United States to lessen the impact on the country's economy .

At a press conference in western Canada, Carney was asked about US President Donald Trump's decision to impose 35% tariffs on Canadian exports not covered by the USMCA (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement), while Washington extended negotiations with Mexico for 90 days without imposing new tariffs.

Carney noted that the goal of Canada's retaliatory tariffs has always been to achieve "maximum impact on the U.S. and minimum impact on Canada."

"So we don't automatically make adjustments. We analyze what is most effective for our industries. In some cases, that will mean rolling back tariffs ," he explained.

Carney also revealed that he has not spoken to Trump in recent days.

The Prime Minister announced aid of up to C$1.2 billion (US$871 million or €752 million) to help the country's timber industry, one of the hardest hit by US tariffs.

Last Thursday, Trump imposed a new wave of tariffs on several countries, which will take effect on August 7.

Canada is one of the countries most affected by the tariffs, and also one of the few that responded to Trump's first announcement with trade retaliation.
