Fraudsters have begun using new pretexts to block Apple devices via iCloud access: installing inaccessible/working applications, helping to find lost gadgets, or transferring data from a damaged device. This was reported to TASS by the press service of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs in response to the agency's request.
As noted, in order to gain access, the attackers convince victims to log into their account on their device. This year, the scheme was used under the pretext of installing programs that are unavailable for Apple or necessary for work, helping to find a lost device or transfer information from a broken gadget, the press center explained.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs gave an example of a scheme in the online dating sphere. The attacker finds a victim with an Apple device and builds a trusting relationship. Then he sends a photo of a broken phone, explaining the impossibility of accessing iCloud. He cites an urgent need to print out airline tickets or materials for the boss. Then the fraudster asks to log into his account, after which he blocks the victim's device, the department clarified.
They added that blocking often serves as a tool for extortion. The threats include deletion of data or irreversible blocking. The average amount of payments does not exceed 10 thousand rubles. Due to the insignificant amounts and the possibility of restoring access to the gadget upon confirmation of ownership, such crimes remain highly latent, the Ministry of Internal Affairs summarized.
