120 participants from several countries will compete in this year's International Student Mathematics Team Competition, which begins on Friday at the University of Silesia in Katowice. Nauka w Polsce is the media patron of the event.
The first day will feature the individual portion, the second day will feature the team portion, and the last day will feature the announcement of the winners and the award ceremony.
Within four hours, the competitors will have to solve problems (5 in the individual part and 10 in the team part) in the following areas: algebra and combinatorics, mathematical analysis (with topology and set theory), functional equations (including differential equations), linear geometry and algebra, measure theory and probability theory.
As organizers from the University of Silesia in Katowice told PAP, 24 teams have registered for this year's edition (two teams from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and one team from the Jagiellonian University will participate remotely). This amounts to a total of 120 participants.
The participants representing Poland are students of such universities as: AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków, Lodz University of Technology, Warsaw University of Technology, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, University of Silesia and University of Warsaw.
Other countries will include teams from Austria, Slovakia, and the United Kingdom, as well as a large group of students from Turkmenistan. Individual participants from Ireland, France, and Italy have also registered to form a joint international team.
The competition is aimed at students interested in mathematics, at any stage of their studies, including doctoral studies.
As the event organizers emphasize, the aim of the competition is to maintain a keen interest in mathematics, support mathematically talented students, develop friendly relations between students and teachers of higher education institutions, and develop interpersonal skills in solving mathematical problems.
The competition is held in English. It is organized by the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Silesia in Katowice and the Polish Mathematical Society.
