Grand Chess Tour: Duda's fourth place in Zagreb
The third place was taken by the current world classical chess champion Gukesh Dommaraju from India, who was in the lead after two days, overtaking Duda by half a point.
The Pole began Sunday's series of rematches with the world's leading grandmasters with three defeats: to the French representative Alireza Firouzja, the American Fabiano Caruana and Dommaraju. Then he defeated the American Wesley So, drew with Nodirbek Abdusattorov from Uzbekistan, won with the Indian Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu and shared a point with the leader Carlsen, for whom it was his first start in the GCT series this season.
A draw with the best chess player in the world in recent years gave the Pole second place in the classification after 16 blitz rounds. However, the grandmaster from Wieliczka lost the last two games - to the Croatian Ivan Saric and the Dutchman Anish Giri, which ultimately pushed him to fourth place.
This is his highest position in this year's Grand Chess Tour. At the opening in Warsaw (rapid and blitz chess) he was seventh, and in Bucharest (classical) - tenth.
The prize pool of the SuperUnited Rapid & Blitz Croatia tournament was 175 thousand dollars. As part of the entire Grand Chess Tour cycle (with a total prize amount of 1.6 million dollars), there will be tournaments in Saint Louis, USA: August 11-15 and the classic Sinquefield Cup August 18-28. The grand final, in which the four best in the overall classification will play, will be organized for the first time by the Brazilian Sao Paulo (September 26 - October 4).
In the general classification of the series after three events, Firouzja is leading - 22.5 points, ahead of Rameshbabu and Frenchman Maxime Vachier Lagrave - 20 each, So - 13.5 and Dommaraju - 13. Duda shares sixth place with Abdusattorov - 11 each.
